Winter Garden TipsPlant a pot of parsley, and rosemary for indoor use. Also, try some greek basil or pesto perpetuo for indoor basil it works great compared to Italian. Perennial basils work better for the inside, and grow lights are a real help; if you've got 'em- use 'em Move housplants indoor gradually, a good spray with insecticidal soap ( SAFER soap) alternating with horticultural oil, every couple days will ward off the bugs! Take cutting from your geraniums, and some of your other favorite tender perennials and root them in sand. a dip in rooting hormone powder or dip move things along quickly. Use your fall leaves to cover over your garden to keep the weeds away,andthe worms happy! Trim, and shape your hydrangeas, rhodededrons, and laurels now cut aleast one third,but not more than a half off. These set buds in the winter so you want to do now NOT in the spring or you will cut off the blooms. Once the leave fall off, wrap your figs, roses and tender hydrangeas with burlap. Heavy coat.spray of dormant oil will help keep the tips from dying because of frost/tip burn. Clean off the the big dead stuff off of your perennials and make sure you have a marker where the plant, if not thwe plastic label,a bamboo stake will make find what is a weed and whatis a real plant easier in the spring when the weeds come up before the perennials.
Master Gardener'sTip - Retaining VariegationVariegated plants sometime produce shoots that revert to plain green. These growths tend to be more vigorous that the variegated shoots and need to be removed as they emerge otherwise the entire plant will revert to green. Pinch at the main stem as needed.
